Signs that Jessie Buckley might be a Highly Sensitive Person?

I’m not laying claim to Jessie Buckley as an HSP because of her leading role, rave reviews and awards for the film, ‘Hamnet’.

What caught my attention was an article about her in last weekend’s Guardian’ (10 January 2026).  And it wasn’t the title – ‘Everyone knows she will go down as one of the best’.  It was the quotes from people who’d worked with her.

Some of what was said took me straight to HSP traits and struggles and, in turn, had me wondering if she is an HSP.  Or, as an actress, is she just exceptionally committed to her art and portrayal of characters?

To be honest, I’m completely ambivalent about the answer.  I just enjoyed the celebration of these traits – and appreciation of some of their costs – because these often attract adverse comment when exhibited by HSPs.

See what you think:

Jessie gave every ounce of herself’ and ‘instinctively pushed the character … like she was a raw nerve who felt everything intensely and was constantly trying to keep that intensity under control.

(Michael Pearce, director of ‘Beast’, 2017)

Jessie was so live all of the time, like she has one less layer of skin than anyone else.

(Rebecca Frecknall, director of ‘Cabaret’ 2021)

It was like observing an animal in its natural habitat: obeying some natural instinct she barely understood, very beautiful, but also if something got in her way, she may bite.

(Ben Whishaw, co-star in ‘Fargo’, 2020 and ‘Women Talking’, 2022).

HSPs constantly give their all and have to keep their intensity under control.  And I’ve blogged before about the ‘raw nerve’ metaphor.  The ‘one less layer of skin’ comment was how an HSP counselling client once described herself to me.  And we HSPs do tend to operate with an instinct beyond our ken (knowledge) and bite (usually, if pushed too far).

Whether you’re an HSP, share or portray HSP characteristics or simply bring attention to HSP-like traits and struggles, thank you Jessie.  And I look forward to seeing you in ‘Hamnet’ later today.  I hear we’re in for an emotional ride – something else HSPs live with daily.

[With thanks to Douglas Eby, read more here about high sensitivity in actors and artists.  I’m curious what Jessie would have to say].
