Releasing the pressure of relentless HSP processing

Processing, processing, always processing.  Deeply.  My reality, others’ observation of me and, of course, one of Elaine Aron’s primary indicators of being an HSP.

If you’re anything like me, it’s relentless isn’t it.  Always something being picked up by the internal scanner.  Another bit of data to add to the equation that’s always running.

Likely going off on tangents which become their own equations and threads.  And, in no time, all adding up to a mind map full of information and thoughts and connections.

It could be about the tasks of the day,  Or a life transition.  Or a particular challenge or event.  Or an injustice (there are so many in the world just now).  Or a creative endeavour.  Or just life (and by ‘just’ I mean that huge thing).

All this processing takes energy – to do, to keep track of and hold of.  It’s exhausting, isn’t it?  And the most exhausting part can be the keeping it in mind, available, not losing it.  Because if it’s important enough to register, it’s important enough to … process.

What an endless loop!

I’ve been in that sort of cycle about a particular project I’ve been working on for a while now.  My processing and processor have been in overdrive.  But a few things have helped:

Sharing.  Luckily I have great people around me who I can release some of the processing pressure with.  And their/my/joint reflections always help something shift.

Knowing my rhythm.  My processing is always clearest first thing in the morning.  Capturing my thinking when it’s at its richest, sharpest, freshest really makes a difference.

Brain breaks.  Essential when I find myself going round in circles.  Getting moving, active, into the fresh air or practical helps me switch off, recharge and start again more productively.

Getting visual.  Whether it’s a whiteboard, post-it notes or the like, there’s nothing like seeing and moving around key points to reset and focus.  And the more colourful, the more fun too.

A deadline.  Whether it’s one you set yourself or one you’re given, it would offend HSP conscientiousness not to meet it, wouldn’t it!  The benefit of another HSP trait.

Completion.  The ultimate freedom from processing.  I’m not there yet but it’s motivating to imagine and something to look forward to.

I wonder what works for you, my fellow HSP?  Whatever it is, may it wing you to your own freedom.
